About this opportunity
Tax Manager
Indianapolis
If you’d like to become a Partner, joining a firm where the owners actually want to hand over client relationships is a good place to start.
I’m working with a small CPA firm and they’d love to bring someone in, give them a book of clients to look after and help them learn how to run that part of the business.
For you, that means getting to know your clients properly, becoming the person they call and having more say in the work you do. Alongside that, you’ll work with the Partners to understand what goes into running a firm, with ownership something you’re actively working towards.
One thing I liked when speaking with them was their attitude to the future. They have no interest in being acquired. For one of the Partners, buying smaller practices is part of the fun. He enjoys finding businesses with good clients and people, and working out how they could fit together.
They’re looking at opportunities around Indianapolis, so if the business side of public accounting interests you, there’s plenty to get involved in as you develop.
They’re flexible on your current title. You could be a Tax Manager or an experienced Senior ready for more. You’ll need your CPA and a hungry, entrepreneurial mindset, with the ambition to run your own part of the firm.
The partnership timeframe will be set by you and your experience.
Your clients would mainly be closely held businesses and their owners, with partnerships, S Corps and related individual returns, plus some more complex HNW work. If you enjoy accounting alongside tax, there’s scope to stay involved in compilations and reviews too.
You’ll need to be comfortable getting involved. It’s a small firm, so some days you’ll be reviewing work and advising clients, and others you’ll be preparing returns and helping the team get things finished.
They’re moving to CCH and looking at how they can make their processes work better. You’d have the opportunity to bring ideas from your own experience and help put them into practice.
And the extra hours you work during busy season count for something. Overtime is banked, with the choice of being paid at your regular hourly rate or taking extra vacation.
They generally aim to keep staff at 55 hours, although some weeks can reach 60.
They also cover 100% of employee health insurance premiums and provide CPE support. Your first 90 days would be in the office, with potential for hybrid working as their IT transition progresses.
If you’ve thought about becoming a Partner but haven’t found a firm where you can see it happening, let’s have a conversation. I can tell you more about the people, the work and what they’d want to help you build.
