About this opportunity
Insurance Coverage and Bad Faith Associate | Raleigh, NC | $150,000 to $210,000
- You read the policy before anyone asks. You spot the exclusion. You flag the reservation of rights issue.
- Then the file goes to someone else to answer the question you found.
- This Raleigh coverage team wants you answering it.
Who I’m hiring for
- I’m Clark Pollins at Distinct Recruitment, recruiting for an established firm with a dedicated coverage team in Raleigh.
- I placed an attorney with this team earlier this year. They’re loving it. That’s the best reference I can give you.
- The team has kept growing since. This seat is open because the work has outgrown the people, not because anyone left.
Two ways in
- Already in coverage: you want to work directly with the partner who runs the team, on files where your analysis is the one the carrier reads.
- Coming from insurance defense: you’ve defended insureds, you keep noticing the coverage questions, and you’re ready to cross over. The firm will genuinely consider you. This is a real route in.
The work
- Reading policy language and telling carriers exactly where they stand.
- Writing coverage opinions a claims team uses to decide what gets paid.
- Advising on bad faith exposure in North Carolina, and South Carolina if you’re barred there.
- Litigating declaratory judgment actions and bad faith claims in state and federal court.
- Advising before a dispute starts, and litigating it when it doesn’t resolve. Both halves of the job.
The team
- Carriers across the Carolinas already know this group. You inherit those relationships rather than spending years building them.
- You work directly with the partner who heads the team.
- The attorneys around you have made coverage their career. You learn from them on live files.
- Coverage is the practice here, not a stop on the way to something else.
- Partnership is earned by your work. Build your practice and the path is open.
The numbers
- $150,000 to $210,000. The firm is hiring at two levels: around two to three years in, and four to five. Your experience sets where you land.
- 1,850 billable hours.
- A strong bonus structure. Some attorneys here receive a guaranteed year end bonus, so ask me what’s on the table for you.
- Hybrid, with real flexibility in how you split your week. Workable from Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill or anywhere across the Triangle.
What you’ll bring
- Two to five years in insurance coverage or insurance defense.
- Familiarity with duty to defend analysis, reservations of rights and declaratory judgment work, or a genuine appetite to learn it.
- NC bar required. SC bar is a big plus, since the team covers both states.
- Strong academics and sharp writing. You enjoy an argument that turns on one defined term.
What happens next
- Our first call is confidential and comes with no pressure. It’s simply a chance to talk through the role and where you want your career to go.
- If you decide to go further, there are normally two rounds of interviews.
- Whatever the outcome, you’ll get constructive feedback. No vanishing applications.
