Volunteer Recruitment and Engagement Manager

Intercambio Uniting Communities connects adult English learners and volunteer English teachers through in-person and online English classes and gatherings to build skills, confidence, and life-changing connections. Trained volunteer teachers are at the heart of this work, teaching adult learners in Colorado and online across the country. We are looking for someone who can grow that volunteer community and keep it thriving. 

The Volunteer Recruitment & Engagement Manager builds and sustains the volunteer base that makes Intercambio’s programs possible. This person recruits, onboards, engages, and retains volunteers across local and national programs, including ongoing and one-time opportunities, so that more learners can access our programs and services. A primary focus of this role is developing and executing a scalable, data-informed strategy to recruit, onboard, and retain volunteer English teachers nationwide, with particular attention to increasing volunteer conversion, reducing onboarding barriers, and strengthening long-term engagement. This position also plays a key role in building a welcoming, connected volunteer community through meaningful engagement opportunities, events, recognition, and ongoing communication. This role works closely with English Programs, Online Growth, Curriculum and Training, and Marketing and Communications to align volunteer recruitment and engagement efforts with program needs and organizational growth priorities. 

This position is full-time (36 hours per week) and reports to the Director of Online Growth, Curriculum and Training. This role is expected to work on-site in our Boulder and Longmont offices approximately two days per week and remotely.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Recruitment

•Develops, implements, and evaluates organization-wide volunteer recruitment and retention strategies, and reports on results regularly. 

•Develops and manages a national volunteer recruitment strategy aligned with program enrollment goals, geographic priorities, and volunteer capacity needs. 

•Builds relationships with community groups including colleges and universities, corporate volunteer programs, professional associations, faith-based organizations, and other local and national partners to create new and sustainable volunteer pipelines. 

•Oversees the content of Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) and other volunteer referral agreements with partner organizations. 

•Identifies additional partner organizations and locations for direct and digital marketing campaigns that raise awareness of Intercambio’s volunteer opportunities. 

•Partners with the Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications to create engaging materials that promote volunteer opportunities including targeted campaigns, volunteer referral initiatives, and volunteer stories. 

•Establishes recruitment goals, monitors results by source and channel, and adjusts strategies to improve effectiveness. 

•Works with English Programs staff to ensure program processes and structures meet the needs of different volunteer groups. 

Volunteer Intake and Onboarding

•Serves as the first point of contact for prospective volunteers, conducting intake and guiding each person through the onboarding requirements for their program, ensuring timely, welcoming, and consistent communication. 

•Develops content for and hosts regular information sessions, in person and online, and answers questions from prospective volunteers as needed, ensuring volunteers are prepared and confident before beginning their assignments. 

•Monitors the volunteer journey from initial inquiry through placement, identifying barriers and opportunities to improve conversion, and reducing onboarding time. 

•Manages the application, background check, and contract processes for new volunteers. 

•Maintains accurate volunteer records, application statuses, and onboarding information in Salesforce or designated volunteer management systems. 

•Collaborates with the Online Growth, Curriculum, and Training team to provide personalized training and onboarding support as needed. 

Engagement, Retention, and Program Support 

•Tracks and analyzes data on prospective and current volunteers, including demographics and retention to identify trends, measure engagement, and recommend improvements. 

•Collaborates with Program Managers to document volunteer participation, both ongoing and at the end of each program, including reasons for volunteer departures and opportunities for re-engagement. 

•Develops and implements volunteer engagement and retention initiatives that foster connection, recognize contributions, and encourage long-term involvement. 

•Leads the planning and implementation of Intercambio's quarterly Community Conversation events, coordinating logistics, communications, and volunteer participation in collaboration with program staff. 

•Collaborates across departments to coordinate volunteer involvement in community events, outreach activities, and special organizational initiatives. 

•Creates opportunities for ongoing volunteer connection, feedback, learning, and recognition. 

•Confirms continuation of Group Class volunteer teachers and coordinates with Program Managers to ensure appropriate teacher coverage for all Group Classes. Ensures coverage of substitute volunteer teachers for pre-arranged absences in Group Classes. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications

•Experience recruiting, coordinating, or managing volunteers. 

•Demonstrated ability to develop and implement recruitment, outreach, or engagement strategies and measure their effectiveness. 

•Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including comfort initiating conversations and following up proactively. 

•Strong relationship-building and leadership skills; works well both leading and contributing to a team. 

•A strategic thinker who stays flexible as conditions change. 

•Proven organizational and project management skills, including managing multiple priorities at once. 

•Experience planning and coordinating events, volunteer activities, or community engagement initiatives. 

•Ability to manage recruitment pipelines, track engagement data, and use information to improve outcomes. 

•Strong technology skills, including proficiency with Microsoft365, and the ability to learn and effectively use CRM or volunteer management platforms. 

•Proficiency in Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. 

•Fluency in spoken and written English. 

•Experience working in multicultural environments. 

•Reliable transportation for travel throughout Boulder County, including tabling at community events and conferences (mileage reimbursed). 

Desired Qualifications

•Proficiency in a language other than English. 

•Experience teaching English to adults. 

•Experience with Salesforce or another CRM or volunteer management platform. 

•Experience building community partnerships or managing volunteer recruitment campaigns across multiple locations.

Starting Salary Range: $60k-$62k per year. Intercambio has a formal, market-based compensation structure. Intercambio also offers a competitive benefits package that includes group health, dental, and vision insurance (Intercambio pays 80% of the premiums), life insurance, vacation and sick leave, Simple IRA after 1 year with a company match of 3%, and funds for annual professional development.
