About this opportunity
There's something quite appealing about joining a smaller firm where you can actually have a say in how things are done.
Not just following the same processes year after year because that's how they've always been done, but having the opportunity to bring your own ideas, take on more responsibility, and grow alongside the business.
I'm working with an independent CPA firm in Skokie with around 15 people, and they're looking to add to their tax team as the firm continues to grow.
It's a good opportunity for someone who enjoys business tax and wants to be somewhere their contribution will actually be noticed.
So, what would you be working on?
The firm works predominantly with healthcare and real estate clients, including skilled nursing facilities, assisted living businesses, and the property entities behind them.
Around 85% of the tax work is business returns, mainly partnerships (1065s), with some individual returns too.
You'll be involved in preparing returns, working closely with the tax team and helping to improve processes and workpapers as the department grows.
And if you've never worked with healthcare clients before, that's absolutely fine. It's a fairly niche area, and they're not expecting you to arrive knowing all the ins and outs.
A few other things worth knowing:
- No weekend work, including during busy season
- Hybrid flexibility depending on the role and experience
- Health, dental, and vision insurance
- 401(k) with employer match
- PTO, sick days, and floating holidays
- Bonus opportunities based on individual and firm performance
- Opportunities to take on more responsibility as the firm grows
It's a smaller team, so you'll have direct access to the partners and the opportunity to get involved in more than just what's written on your job description.
They're keen to find someone who enjoys working with others, communicates well, and is happy to take a bit of initiative.
Who would this suit?
Someone with public accounting experience who's comfortable preparing business tax returns and wants to keep developing.
Experience with partnerships would be particularly useful, but you don't need a background in healthcare or real estate to be considered.
You don't need a CPA or EA either. They're much more interested in finding someone who's good at what they do, willing to learn, and wants to build a career with the firm.
If you're at a larger firm where you're feeling a little lost in the crowd, or somewhere smaller where you're not getting the opportunities you'd hoped for, this could be worth exploring.
There's something nice about joining a growing firm where you're not just filling a seat, but can actually have an influence on how things develop.
If you're just browsing the job boards and haven't dusted off your resume yet, that's not a problem. Give me a call first. Search Lucy Weibel at Distinct North America. Or if it's easier, send me a connection request or message, and we'll pick it up from there.
If you've read this advert and aren't sure whether you have every bit of experience they're looking for, I'd still encourage you to apply. We work with CPA firms across the US that are committed to building diverse, inclusive and equitable workplaces, and if this isn't quite the right fit, there's every chance I'll know one that is.
