Tax Accountant, Real Estate Private Equity

Chicago, IL (downtown, hybrid) | $75K to $100K base + 10% bonus

A long-standing Chicago real estate private equity firm is adding to its in-house tax team. The firm invests alongside developers and operators across property types, through funds, joint ventures, and REIT structures, for institutional and private investors.

This is the client side of real estate tax. Outside CPA firms prepare the returns; you review them, run REIT testing, and answer the tax questions that come up on deals and from investors. It is a small team, so you see every fund and every sale. The last person in this seat moved up to lead tax in about three years.

What you'll own

• Review partnership and corporate returns and sale calcs prepared by outside CPA firms
• Quarterly tax estimates, extensions, and return payments
• Quarterly and annual REIT testing and the support behind it
• Federal, state, and local notices and audits
• Day-to-day work with Big 4 and mid-tier tax and audit teams
• Tax impact of acquisitions, operations, and sales, with fund accounting and asset management
• Tax research and short technical memos
• Investor tax updates, including foreign reporting and withholding questions

What you bring

• Bachelor's or master's in accounting
• 1 to 2 years of federal tax, in public accounting or in-house
• Partnership or other flow-through returns
• You know GAAP vs taxable income and can book tax entries
• Organized, clear writer, comfortable asking questions and making a call

Nice to have

• Real estate, REIT, or private equity clients
• REIT compliance or testing
• CPA or on the way
• Interest in AI tools to speed up tax work

• Hybrid: in office Monday to Thursday downtown, remote Friday
• Travel: none
• Range: $75K to $100K base, plus 10% bonus
