About this opportunity
Senior R&D Engineer – Electrical & FPGA Design
Location: San Diego, CA
Employment Type: Full-Time | Onsite (5 days/week)
Base Salary: $140,000–$180,000 annually
About the Opportunity
We are partnering with an innovative medical technology company developing next-generation implantable electronics and brain-computer interface systems.
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior R&D Electrical Engineer with deep expertise in FPGA development, mixed-signal electronics, and low-power hardware design.
This is a hands-on engineering opportunity to lead the electrical and programmable-logic development of advanced implantable systems, from architecture and prototyping through verification and production readiness.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect, design, and implement FPGA logic using VHDL or SystemVerilog for low-power, high-reliability electronic systems.
- Develop supervisory logic, power sequencing, watchdogs, fault detection, redundant monitoring, and fail-safe mechanisms.
- Design high-speed serial communication interfaces, including LVDS, SPI, synchronization, clocking, and error detection.
- Lead mixed-signal electrical architecture, schematic design, component selection, and custom silicon integration.
- Develop and optimize inductive wireless charging systems, resonant circuits, and low-power electronics.
- Design and review high-density PCB and rigid-flex assemblies using Altium Designer.
- Conduct FPGA verification, timing closure, clock-domain crossing analysis, simulation, and hardware bring-up.
- Define and execute electrical verification protocols, reliability testing, and failure analysis.
- Collaborate with ASIC, firmware, mechanical, and systems engineering teams.
- Support medical device design controls, risk management, and regulatory documentation.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
- 8+ years of mixed-signal hardware design experience.
- 5+ years of hands-on FPGA development using VHDL or SystemVerilog.
- Strong knowledge of FPGA architecture, RTL design, simulation, timing closure, and clock-domain crossing.
- Experience with high-speed serial interfaces, including LVDS/CML, SPI, and digital communication protocols.
- Experience designing safety-critical or fault-tolerant electronic systems.
- Hands-on experience with inductive power transfer, wireless charging, or equivalent resonant/magnetics design.
- Proficiency in Altium Designer, PCB design, and SPICE-class simulation.
- Experience integrating and debugging embedded electronics and firmware.
- Experience taking hardware from prototype through design verification and production.
Preferred Qualifications
- Implantable medical device or neurotechnology experience.
- Experience with ASIC/FPGA integration.
- Low-power electronics, RF telemetry, or wireless communication systems.
- Familiarity with ISO 14971, IEC 60601, IEC 62304, or ISO 14708.
- Experience developing miniaturized, high-reliability electronic systems.
Compensation
Competitive base salary of $140,000–$180,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
If you are passionate about advanced electronics, FPGA engineering, and developing technologies with meaningful real-world impact, we would love to connect.
Note: Only candidates that are authorized to work in USA without any restrictions will be considered at this time.
