About this opportunity
Insurance Defense Associate or Partner | Charlotte, NC (Hybrid) | $130,000 to $240,000 | Trucking, Premises, Construction Defect, Product and Professional Liability
- Most defense files arrive after the carrier has already made its big calls. You never see how they weighed the claim. You just defend what’s left.
- At this firm, coverage and defense sit under one roof. You see the whole claim, from the carrier’s first look to trial.
- If you’re a partner, that changes what you can offer. Your carrier clients get coverage advice and defense counsel from one firm, and one relationship: yours.
Why I keep sending attorneys here
- I’m Clark Pollins at Distinct Recruitment, recruiting for a national insurance defense and coverage firm hiring in its Charlotte office.
- People stay. The average attorney has been with the firm for over five years.
- I’ve placed several attorneys with this firm across the Carolinas. They’re still there.
- The Charlotte office is growing with its carrier work. They’re adding partners to lead it and associates to grow with it.
The files coming in
- Trucking and transportation. Charlotte sits where major freight routes meet, and the claims follow.
- Premises liability.
- Construction defect, including disputes between owners, contractors, subcontractors and architects. A city that’s been building this fast produces plenty of them.
- Product liability.
- Professional liability, including malpractice and E&O.
- One strong defense background is enough. Nobody expects all five.
Partners, up to $240,000
- Bring your carrier relationships and give them more. Coverage and defense from one firm is a stronger pitch than either alone.
- When a carrier client has claims beyond North Carolina, you have a national firm behind you instead of a referral to make.
- A real team. Associates and support staff carry the work that doesn’t need a partner, so your time goes on clients, strategy, business development and trial.
- The team you build stays built. With average tenure over five years, the associates you train are still beside you when your book grows.
- Associates to mentor. Everything you know about reading adjusters, prepping witnesses and knowing when a case should try gets passed to attorneys who’ll use it.
- Ask me how the firm credits origination and what your book would mean for your package. I’ll give you a straight answer.
Associates, around $130,000
- No book needed. The carriers already send the work.
- Your own files, from first report to resolution or trial.
- Adjusters learn your name because you make the calls and write the reports.
- Partners mentor you toward partnership. You’re hired as a future partner, and treated like one.
The practical bits
- Billable target of 1,850 to 1,900 hours, depending on level.
- Depositions, mediations and court appearances.
- In the Charlotte office three days a week. The other two are yours to plan around hearings, depositions and life.
You’ll bring
- North Carolina bar admission.
- Partners: an established insurance defense practice with carrier relationships.
- Associates: two or more years of insurance defense experience.
- Reports an adjuster can read in two minutes and act on.
What happens next
- The first conversation is confidential and pressure free. For partners, that includes your book and client relationships. We talk through the role and what you want from your career, and you decide from there.
- The firm normally runs two rounds of interviews.
- You’ll get constructive feedback either way.
