About this opportunity
Controller – Automatic Leasing Service
Richmond, VA (Scott's Addition) | $140,000–$160,000 | Onsite
Are you an experienced Controller who wants to build something, not just maintain it? Automatic Leasing Service, a privately held, family-owned commercial laundry equipment and service company, is hiring a hands-on Controller who can lead, coach, and grow the accounting department.
For 70 years, Automatic Leasing Service has provided washer and dryer equipment and service to multifamily communities, hotels, extended stays, and other commercial customers throughout the Mid-Atlantic. Today we’re a fast-growing company headquartered in Richmond’s vibrant Scott’s Addition neighborhood, surrounded by breweries, restaurants, and some of the city’s most creative businesses.
We’re looking for a working leader: someone who rolls up their sleeves alongside the team, coaches and mentors others, and takes pride in developing people as much as processes. This role is ultimately responsible for managing the company’s financial transactions and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of its financial statements. You’ll build and lead an accounting team that keeps client billing, vendor payables, and monthly financial statements timely and accurate. You’ll also handle highly confidential information, manage external accounting, tax, insurance, and audit relationships, and drive efficiency through analysis and streamlined workflows that support outstanding customer service.
This is an opportunity to grow with the business and shape the future of the finance function as a trusted partner to executive leadership.Responsibilities
- Lead all accounting functions: accounts receivable, accounts payable, financial statements, and credit and collections.
- Build, coach, and mentor the accounting team; develop staff skills and create a clear path for growth within the department.
- Establish financial policies, procedures, controls, and reporting systems to maximize return on financial assets.
- Provide cash management, reconciliation, and oversight.
- Prepare financial reports, including monthly P&L and balance sheets; analyze results, communicate variances or issues, and recommend improvements.
- Prepare annual budgets and analyze monthly budget versus actual; establish reporting schedules, data collection, and consolidation.
- Create and maintain highly confidential data, including employee and personal information; disclose financial information on a need-to-know basis.
- Review payroll, timesheets, PTO, and benefit information for accuracy and on-time processing; manage payroll vendor relationships and tools.
- Partner with the company’s CPA firm to ensure financials are accurate and compliant with local, state, and federal requirements; file required reports and advise executives on necessary actions.
- Stay current on changes in legislation and accounting practices through seminars, professional associations, and research.
- Lead key initiatives within the Strategic Plan and contribute to company strategy; act as a role model for company values and culture.
- Serve on the Management team and contribute to overall business plans and processes.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred.
- 10+ years of accounting experience; transportation/logistics industry preferred.
- Experience leading, coaching, and developing accounting staff.
- QuickBooks experience preferred.
- Highly organized and detail oriented, with strong critical thinking and analytical skills to identify trends and exercise sound judgment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication; strong influence, negotiation, and relationship management skills.
- Reliable: delivers results consistently, follows through, and consistently follows company processes.
- Resourceful: works independently, seeks solutions to obstacles, and takes ownership of work, team productivity, and customers.
- Customer-focused: keeps customer needs top of mind while protecting the company’s financial health.
- Proactive: strong work ethic and high energy; takes initiative, thinks ahead, and mitigates risk.
- Flexible and team-oriented: willing to go the extra mile, adapts easily to daily changes, and collaborates to drive lasting improvements.
