About this opportunity

Tax Advisory ManagerSMEED CPA, Inc. · Virtual Family Office Practice · Remote (United States)

smeedcpa.com | Tax Advisory & Wealth Building

WE ARE NOT YOUR TYPICAL CPA FIRM.

We're looking for a forward-thinking, technology-driven tax professional — someone highly self-motivated, deeply curious, and genuinely passionate about client outcomes, not just compliance.

ROLE SNAPSHOT

·        Position: Senior Tax Advisor

·        Location: Remote — United States

·        Compensation: $90,000 – $110,000 base salary, plus performance incentives targeted at 15% of base (up to 20% for exceptional performance) — total target cash compensation of approximately $104,000 – $127,000

·        License: Active CPA required — licensed in any US state, in good standing

·        Experience: 5+ years of tax experience

·        Work Mix: ~60–70% advisory & planning / 30–40% tax return review

·        Busy season: Capped at 50 hours per week

ABOUT SMEED CPA

SMEED CPA is a Virtual Family Office CPA practice providing tax advisory to high-performing, successful entrepreneurs — clients nationwide, all serviced virtually, around 650 tax returns a year. We are advisory-first: planning happens through the year, not in April. Our clients work with an advisor who knows their whole picture — business, real estate, family and long-term wealth — not a different specialist for every form. Our advisors are thought partners on business structure, real estate, retirement and wealth transfer, not processors of forms. That is what the family office model means in practice: one trusted advisor who sees the client's entire financial picture and plans across all of it, all year — the way a wealthy family's own office would, delivered virtually. SMEED CPA has been built on that model since 2007.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

You'll split your time between forward-looking advisory work and hands-on technical review — staying sharp on both sides of the practice:

·        Lead tax planning conversations for a curated roster of entrepreneurial clients across real estate, business structuring, high-income professionals, and estate/wealth transfer

·        Spend roughly 30–40% of your time reviewing a variety of tax returns — including 1040, 1120S, 1065, 1120, 990, and 1041 — ensuring accuracy, quality, and alignment with each client's broader strategy

·        Use tax return review as a lens for advisory insight — spotting planning opportunities, not just checking for errors

·        Build and maintain deep, ongoing relationships — you're a thought partner, not a processor. Owning a client relationship here means trust, retention, and spotting the next planning opportunity — there is no sales quota in this role

·        You report directly to a partner — there are no layers between you, the partners, and your clients

·        Run a year-round advisory calendar for your roster: recurring planning conversations, quarterly projections and estimates, and follow-through until each strategy is actually implemented

·        Prepare projections and estimates, carry out tax research, and turn your conclusions into clear, plain-English summaries clients can act on

·        Handle IRS and state tax notices for your clients, with partner support on anything contentious

·        Raise the whole team as you review: clear, constructive review notes that coach preparers and lift quality across the practice

·        Leverage modern tax and workflow technology to work efficiently and keep the client experience seamless. Our tax work runs on Instead, with client collaboration and workflow in TaxDome

YOUR FIRST 90 DAYS

By day 30, you'll know our clients, our technology and our standards, and be reviewing returns to firm standard with a partner alongside you. By day 60, you'll be leading planning conversations for your roster and drafting strategy recommendations. By day 90, you'll own those client relationships day-to-day — planning calendar, projections and follow-through — and, where the opportunity exists, be putting your first strategies into effect for clients.

WHO THRIVES HERE

·        You're a forward thinker who questions "the way it's always been done"

·        You're technology-driven — you adopt new tools and workflows early, not just tolerate them

·        You're self-motivated — you don't need someone watching over your shoulder to do great work

·        You feel invested in client outcomes, not just deliverables

·        You're comfortable holding both precision (technical review) and perspective (advisory strategy) at the same time

·        You read the room, adjust your communication style, and earn trust before you give advice

·        You write the way you advise: clearly, in plain English a business owner can act on

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

·        Active CPA license in good standing — any US state

·        5+ years of tax experience, spanning both technical review and advisory work

·        Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field

·        Strong hands-on experience preparing and/or reviewing complex 1040, 1120S, and 1065 returns, including multi-state filings

·        Working exposure to 1120, 1041, and 990 returns

·        Deep working knowledge in at least two of: real estate taxation (including real estate professionals, syndications, cost segregation, and 1031 exchanges), business structuring and entity choice, estate and wealth-transfer planning, retirement and Roth strategies, or other advanced tax mitigation strategies

·        Demonstrated ability to own client relationships independently

·        Experience with cloud-based tax and practice technology — we work in Instead and TaxDome

Strongly Preferred:

·        Exposure to high-net-worth or entrepreneurial client bases

·        A Master's degree or MST

·        A background in an advisory firm, family office, or independent practice — but traditional public accounting backgrounds are genuinely welcome. What matters is not where you've worked; it's that you want to spend most of your time advising, not processing

WHAT WE OFFER

·        $90,000 – $110,000 base salary

·        Performance incentives targeted at 15% of base salary (approximately $13,500 – $16,500), rising to 20% for exceptional performance, assessed on the quality and timeliness of your work, client outcomes and retention, and planning opportunities identified and implemented

·        Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits

·        Generous paid time off

·        Fully remote working, within the United States

·        A busy season with a ceiling: 50 hours per week maximum

·        An advisory-first calendar — planning work through the year, not a practice that lives only in March and April

·        A curated, deliberately manageable client roster: you will know your clients, their businesses and their families, and you will see your advice implemented — your advisory time is protected, not what is left after compliance

·        A real growth path: Senior Tax Advisor today, with a clear route to Tax Manager and advisory leadership as the practice grows — and direct access to, and mentorship from, the partners from day one

·        Professional development: ongoing training in tax advisory and in our technology, with support for your CPE and CPA licence maintenance, so your expertise keeps compounding

That's all we ask at this stage. Candidates who pass the résumé screen will be invited to answer one question in up to 3 short paragraphs (about 250 words), within 3 business days:

"Describe a moment when you realized your value to a client had nothing to do with a tax form."

We review applications as they arrive and reply to shortlisted candidates within 5 business days. Your CPA license will be verified before an offer is made. SMEED CPA is an equal opportunity employer.
