What makes a doctor trust their defense lawyer? In my experience it's rarely charm. It's the moment the lawyer reads a chart, spots the gap between the nursing notes and the operative report, and explains what it means before anyone else has noticed. Doctors respect people who've done the reading.

I'm recruiting, on behalf of a Miami insurance defense firm, for a medical malpractice attorney who wants more of that kind of work and less time in the background.

The role at a glance

• Medical malpractice defense for physicians, hospitals and healthcare providers across South Florida

• Hybrid, with a base in Miami

• 1,950 billable hours a year

• $125,000 to $200,000, a deliberately wide band so senior associates and counsel level attorneys are paid for what they bring

What you'd be doing day to day

• Working through medical records and building the defense theory with the client and experts

• Taking and defending depositions of treating physicians, nurses, plaintiffs and retained experts

• Handling presuit, mediations, Daubert and summary judgment motions, and preparing cases for trial

• Advising clients directly and reporting to carriers, with your name on the work

• For experienced attorneys: first chair trial work, larger exposure files and supervising other members of the team

What you'll need

• Florida Bar membership

• 2+ years of litigation experience, with medical malpractice defense strongly preferred

• Comfort with medical terminology and a real interest in how medicine works

• Good judgment on when a case should be tried and when it should be resolved
