Auto defense gets underrated. People call it routine. I'd argue it's the best trial training in Florida, because few practices give you so many chances to stand up in court and win an argument about causation. The question is whether your current role gives you those chances.

What you'd handle

• Auto negligence defense, from low impact collisions to serious injury claims with complex medical issues

• Full ownership of your files: evaluations, written discovery, depositions and motion practice

• Depositions of plaintiffs, treating providers, biomechanical experts and accident reconstructionists

• Mediations and trials, including first chair work for experienced attorneys

• Direct communication with adjusters on strategy and value

What you need

• Florida Bar membership

• 2+ years of litigation experience, ideally in auto or insurance defense

• Comfort cross examining medical experts on causation and treatment

• Senior associates and counsel are a strong fit. The more you've done, the more complex the files and the bigger your role in mentoring and strategy

What it looks like week to week

• Hybrid, working from the Tampa office and from home

• 1,950 billable hours a year

• Pay between $125,000 and $200,000. It's set broad so that a seasoned trial lawyer isn't capped at an entry level figure

The case for moving

Auto files move quickly, which makes them a great engine for experience. Every month brings depositions, hearings and settlement conferences. In the right role, that adds up to trial experience and a reputation with carriers far faster than most practices allow. If you're doing the work but not getting the courtroom time, it's worth a change of scenery.
