Falls Church, VA

Full-timeOn-site

About this opportunity

Cook Architecture is a small residential studio in Northern Virginia focused on modern new homes, residential additions and renovations, and updating and expanding midcentury-modern houses. Our projects are design-driven, but the work does not stop at the concept. We care just as much about how buildings are detailed and how they are ultimately built.

We are hiring an experienced architect or architectural designer to take an active role in their own projects. You will help develop the schematic design for presentation, then carry the work through construction documents, permitting, and into the field. You will work closely with the principal on design and have real ownership of the work as it develops. We’re looking for someone who enjoys the point where architecture becomes buildable, and where design decisions are resolved through drawings and details. Salary depends heavily on experience and skill, with real growth as you learn and take on more.

One of the advantages of our small studio is getting to see the whole arc of a project. You will be involved from the first client presentation through the punch list, working directly with clients, consultants, and contractors along the way. If you are working toward licensure, the work here covers the full range of AXP experience, and we will support you through the process.

What you will do

  • Run your own residential projects from Schematic Design presentation through Construction Documents.
  • Help develop the schematic design for client presentation, working from the principal’s concept.
  • Draw and coordinate plans, elevations, sections, details, and schedules in AutoCAD.
  • Translate design intent into clear, buildable drawings while carrying the original idea through the technical decisions that follow.
  • Coordinate structural, mechanical, civil, and other consultant information.
  • Carry projects through permitting and respond to review comments.
  • Participate in construction administration, including RFIs, submittals, site visits, and field conditions.
  • Catch coordination problems on paper before they become problems on site.

How we work

You will work directly with the principal architect and the rest of our small team. Drawing reviews often happen together at your desk, in real time, so there is plenty of opportunity to talk through design and technical decisions as the work develops.

It’s an active, collaborative studio. People think out loud, and priorities sometimes shift during the day. A contractor may call with a question that needs an answer that afternoon. We work best with people who are comfortable explaining the thinking behind a drawing, hearing another point of view, and adjusting the work when it improves the project.

What we’re looking for

  • Professional experience producing Construction Documents.
  • Strong AutoCAD skills and the ability to develop an accurate, coordinated drawing set.
  • Working knowledge of residential construction, including wall and roof assemblies, waterproofing, foundations, window and door interfaces, stairs, and millwork.
  • The ability to take direction, think independently, and communicate clearly while working through design and technical problems.
  • Comfort working in a small, collaborative studio where projects and priorities can move quickly.
  • An architecture degree. Licensure is welcome but not required. Experience and technical ability matter more.
  • At least 3 to 7 years of professional experience.
