About this opportunity

BMA Media Group: Web Designer Job Description

NOTE: We are moving to Hudson, OH around Q3 of 2027. We are temporarily in Downtown Willoughby, OH until that time. We can arrange a hybrid work agreement until that time.

About BMA and the Role

BMA Media Group is hiring a Web Designer to build websites that members, apprentices and business managers actually use, and to be a trusted teammate to everyone in the building.

BMA is a full-service marketing and communications agency specializing in content for building trades and workplace organizations. Our clients include international unions, training institutes, local unions and apprenticeship programs, and our work spans brand, web, video, print, events and campaigns. As our Web Designer, you will design the public face of those organizations: websites, recruitment sites, and the look and feel of member portals and apps.

  • Title: Web Designer
  • Employment: Full-time
  • Reports to: Digital & Print Manager
  • Location: BMA office in Hudson, OH (temporarily in Willoughby, OH until an estimated Q3 2027)
  • Works with: Client Services, Projects and Operations, Video, Events and our client contacts

Our Mission, Vision and Values

Mission: BMA exists to honor the dignity of skilled work by helping building trades unions tell their story with excellence, integrity, and measurable impact.

Vision: Every union building trades organization's story is effectively communicated to its desired audiences.

Values

  1. Honor the Work. Serve First. Respect the dignity of skilled trades; lead with humility and responsiveness.
  2. Craft with Excellence. Sweat the details; deliver work we're proud to put our name on.
  3. Integrity. Own the Outcome. Do the right thing; keep commitments; take responsibility end-to-end.
  4. Measure What Matters. Use data to prove impact, learn fast, and decide better.
  5. Build People, Build the Business. Coach, grow leaders, and build a culture worth staying for.

What We Look For

We hire for fit first and skill second, because skills can be taught and character can't. Beyond the values above, we look for someone who:

  • Tells the truth early. If a deadline is at risk or a design isn't working, we hear it from you first, not from the client.
  • Keeps growing. Stays coachable, asks for feedback and keeps sharpening their craft.
  • Leads from wherever they sit. Everyone at BMA influences others. Do it humbly and honestly, for the good of the people around you.

We also look at whether you understand the work, want the work and have the capacity to do it well.

Seat Accountabilities

The Web Designer is accountable for five things. Done well, they make this seat a success.

  1. Design and build client websites. Turn a client's goals and brand into clear, modern, mobile-first sites for union Locals, JATCs and related organizations, from wireframe through launch.
  2. Hold the quality bar. Every site meets BMA's standards for accessibility, speed, security, SEO and cross-browser performance before it goes live.
  3. Deliver on time and communicate early. Hit agreed milestones, flag risks the moment you see them, and keep clients and teammates informed without being chased.
  4. Care for what we launch. Maintain, update and improve live sites, using analytics and client feedback to make them better over time.
  5. Strengthen the team and the system. Document your process, build reusable templates and components, and help BMA get faster and better with every project.

Day-to-day responsibilities

  • Turn discovery notes and client conversations into sitemaps, wireframes, mockups and working builds.
  • Build and maintain sites in WordPress, and design the look and feel of member portals and apps, partnering with developers where custom code is needed.
  • Apply BMA's brand and each client's brand consistently across every design.
  • Work with the Digital & Print Manager, Client Services and Projects and Operations on scope, timelines and revisions.
  • Connect sites to forms, email platforms, event registration, analytics and member systems.
  • Train client staff to update their sites, and answer support requests promptly.
  • Present designs to clients with a clear reason behind each decision.

This role also carries quarterly Rocks: one to three priorities set each quarter and tied directly to performance reviews, compensation and bonuses.

Skills, Experience and Tools

Required

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Deep knowledge of WordPress, including themes, plugins and ongoing maintenance.
  • Portfolio of web design and build work that shows strong visual design, usability and attention to detail.
  • Working familiarity with HTML, CSS and JavaScript. You do not need to be a developer.
  • Proficiency in design tools such as Figma and the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Working knowledge of responsive design, web accessibility, site speed and on-page SEO.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, and comfort presenting work to clients.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines and to ask for help early.

Preferred

  • Experience with page builders such as Divi, Elementor or WP Bakery.
  • Agency or client-services experience.
  • Experience with forms, email marketing, analytics and event registration tools.
  • Familiarity with member management or union systems and with building trades, union or nonprofit audiences.
  • Basic video, motion or photo-editing skills.
  • Interest in using AI tools responsibly to work faster without lowering quality.
