About this opportunity
Location: Remote, with a preference for candidates based in New York City.
Porter & Company is looking for a Software Engineer to help build and improve the technology behind our investment research business, from customer-facing websites and financial tools to internal applications, integrations, and automation.
We’re looking for someone who enjoys figuring things out, asks thoughtful questions, and takes pride in delivering software people depend on. You should be comfortable taking an idea, understanding the business need, and working through the details to get it into production.
You’ll thrive here if you enjoy a fast-paced, startup environment, take initiative, and adapt as priorities evolve. We value people who bring solutions, communicate clearly, and follow through.
What you’ll do
- Build and maintain features across frontend applications, backend services, APIs, and databases.
- Improve our member experience, including account access, research content, and interactive financial tools.
- Develop integrations connecting publishing, marketing, customer management, and other business systems.
- Automate repetitive work and build internal tools that help colleagues work more effectively.
- Investigate production issues, identify root causes, and deliver lasting fixes.
- Work directly with engineering, editorial, marketing, and customer service to turn business needs into practical software.
- Own your work through implementation, testing, deployment, documentation, and follow-up.
What we’re looking for
- Experience building and shipping web applications used by real customers or teams.
- Strong JavaScript or TypeScript skills and experience with React or a similar frontend framework.
- Experience developing backend services in Python, Node.js, or a comparable environment.
- Comfort working with APIs, relational databases, authentication, and third-party integrations.
- Solid engineering fundamentals, including readable code, version control, thoughtful testing, and systematic debugging.
- The ability to navigate an unfamiliar codebase, ask useful questions, and make progress independently.
- Experience succeeding in a startup or similarly fast-paced environment, balancing changing priorities with reliable execution.
- Clear communication with technical and nontechnical teammates.
- Good judgment about when to move quickly, when to investigate further, and when to ask for help.
Experience that would be helpful
- Next.js, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, and AWS
- Content management systems, subscription products, CRM integrations, or email automation.
- Financial data, investment research tools, or digital publishing.
- Using AI coding tools effectively while reviewing, testing, and taking responsibility for the resulting code.
How you’ll make an impact
You’ll help turn ideas into useful products, make existing systems more reliable, and reduce manual work across the business. This role offers meaningful ownership and direct collaboration with the people using what you build.
We value curiosity, practical problem-solving, and follow-through. We’re interested in what you’ve built, the problems you’ve solved, and how you approach learning something new.
- Include a GitHub profile, portfolio, or project link if available, and tell us what you personally contributed.
