About MyFriendBen

MyFriendBen helps families find and get the public benefits and tax credits they qualify for, in about six minutes. We have served more than 175,000 households across 9 states, and 90% of users discover programs they didn't know existed.

We're a small, mission-driven nonprofit tech team building the navigation layer for America's safety net: an eligibility screener, Benji ("the navigator in your pocket"), and Ben Manager, an easy management and communication tool for the caseworkers and community partners who walk alongside families. We grew from 2 states to 9 in 2026, and we're now working with states, large systems, and national funders to bring MyFriendBen to many more families.

The role

MyFriendBen is growing fast: more states, more partners, more funders, and a bigger team. We're hiring a Director of Operations to run the organization behind that growth.

You'll own the systems that keep a growing nonprofit healthy: finance and grants operations, people and hiring, contracts and compliance, and the team rhythms that turn plans into results. You'll be the CEO's operating partner, taking day-to-day execution off her plate so she can focus on funders, states, and strategy.

If you love building order out of momentum, and you want that work to reach hundreds of thousands of families, this role is for you.

What you'll ownFinance and grants operations
  • Own the budget, monthly close, and cash-flow tracking with our finance and accounting partners.
  • Build and run the grants calendar: every deadline, report, and deliverable, tracked and delivered on time.
  • Manage restricted funds and grant compliance so every funder's support goes where we promised.
  • Prepare financial and operating materials for board meetings and the annual audit.
People and hiring
  • Run hiring end to end, from job descriptions and sourcing to offers and onboarding.
  • Own employee and contractor agreements, payroll, benefits administration, and HR policies.
  • Build an onboarding experience that makes new teammates productive in their first two weeks.
  • Strengthen a culture rooted in our values: Impact First, Results Focused, Human Centered, Driving Change.
Contracts, legal, and compliance
  • Manage partner MOUs, data-sharing agreements, vendor contracts, and state government agreements, working with the partnerships team and outside counsel.
  • Keep nonprofit filings, insurance, and organizational policies current.
  • Partner with our CTO on privacy and security policies for the sensitive information families trust us with.
Team operating rhythm
  • Run planning and OKRs across fundraising, partnerships, and product, and track progress every week.
  • Own internal communications, team meetings, and offsites.
  • Manage the tools the team runs on (Google Workspace, Slack, HubSpot, Linear) alongside our product team.
  • Coordinate board meetings, board packets, and follow-ups.
  • Supervise operations staff and contractors.
What success looks like

First 90 days

  • A single grants and reporting calendar the whole team uses, with no missed deadlines.
  • Monthly financials closed and shared on a predictable schedule.
  • A standard hiring and onboarding process used for every new role.
  • Every active contract and agreement tracked in one place, with an owner and renewal date.

First year

  • Our finance, grants, and HR operations are ready for a larger team, more states, and a clean audit.
  • Board materials go out on time every meeting with minimal lift from the CEO.
  • New state launches have the contracts, budgets, and staffing in place before go-live.
  • The team knows its goals, sees its progress weekly, and spends its time on the work that matters most.
Who you are

You have:

  • 6+ years in operations, finance, or people roles, including at least 2 years leading operations at a startup or nonprofit.
  • Hands-on experience with budgets, grant compliance and reporting, and audits.
  • Practical HR experience: hiring, contracts, payroll, benefits, and employment compliance across multiple states.
  • A systems mindset: you build simple processes that people use and keep using.
  • Excellent organization and follow-through; you stay calm with many deadlines at once.
  • Clear, warm communication with staff, board members, funders, and partners.
  • A commitment to economic mobility and to the families we serve.

Bonus points:

  • Experience with government contracts or multi-state nonprofit operations.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit accounting and tools like QuickBooks.
  • Experience at a tech nonprofit or with data privacy policies.
  • Lived experience navigating the benefits system.
  • Spanish or another language spoken by the communities we serve.
