Job Description: Our client is an industry leader in high-performance lawn care equipment, utility tractors, and precision turf machinery, is seeking a Mid-Level Embedded Software Engineer to join their software engineering team in Cary, NC (RTP area). In this hands-on vehicle controls role, you will take ownership of developing, validating, and optimizing embedded software for next-generation turf and compact utility tractors. You will design control algorithms using MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow (Model-Based Design), write production C/C++ code, configure low-level embedded drivers, interface over CAN bus / SAE J1939 networks, and spend dedicated time directly on machines conducting field tests and software tuning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Model-Based Design (MBD): Develop, simulate, and auto-code vehicle control algorithms using MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow for electro-hydraulic, powertrain, and implement control systems.
  • Embedded C/C++ Programming: Write, configure, and maintain robust production-level software in C and C++ on real-time embedded targets and microcontrollers.
  • Vehicle Bus Communication: Implement and test vehicle communication networks utilizing CAN bus (SAE J1939), LIN, and diagnostic messaging protocols.
  • Low-Level Hardware & Driver Integration: Integrate embedded operating systems, low-level board support packages (BSPs), device drivers, and sensor inputs; read electrical schematics and verify electronic control units (ECUs).
  • Vehicle Platform Testing & Tuning: Spend time hands-on with actual turf mowers and compact tractors—validating features, logging CAN telemetry, and calibrating control parameters in lab and field settings.
  • Verification & Agile Delivery: Perform unit testing, Software-in-the-Loop (SIL), and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing within an Agile software delivery framework.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • Experience Level: 3+ years of professional embedded software development experience (per manager request: mid-career experience required, no recent graduates).
  • Model-Based Development: Proven proficiency modeling and simulating embedded controls using MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow.
  • Embedded Coding: Strong hands-on programming foundation in C and/or C++ for microcontrollers or embedded control units.
  • Protocols & Networking: Practical working experience with CAN bus networks and SAE J1939 communication protocols.
  • Hardware & Diagnostics: Ability to read electrical schematics, data sheets, and use basic lab diagnostics tools (logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, or CAN analyzers like CANoe/CANalyzer).
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE), Computer Engineering (BSCE), or Mechanical Engineering (BSME).

Stand-Out Skills (Preferred):

  • Background designing controls for off-highway machinery, agricultural tractors, automotive powertrains, or heavy commercial vehicles.
  • Experience with automated test frameworks, continuous integration (CI/CD), and automated build pipelines.
  • Practical understanding of electro-hydraulic systems, motor controllers, or battery-electric vehicle systems.
  • Active driver's license with comfort operating turf equipment and mowers during test sessions.

Actual Skills Required:

  1. Model-Based Software Design (MATLAB, Simulink & Stateflow)
  2. Embedded C / C++ Software Development & Embedded OS Drivers
  3. CAN Bus Architecture & SAE J1939 Communication Protocols
  4. Vehicle Platform Software Integration, HIL/SIL Testing & Field Tuning
  5. Electrical Schematics Reading & Vehicle Electronic Control Systems
