Job Description: Head Baker

About Philo Ridge Farm

Philo Ridge Farm (PRF) is a working nonprofit demonstration farm located in Vermont’s Champlain Valley. Using innovative and ecologically sustainable practices, we steward over 500 acres of pastureland, forests, and diversified produce gardens. We rotationally graze heritage breed livestock and cultivate certified organic fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Our mission is to promote organic regenerative agriculture through hands-on research, education, and community engagement. As a living laboratory, we provide farmers, students, and the public with opportunities to explore sustainable farming practices. Through educational initiatives and collaborative partnerships, we seek to deepen our understanding of food systems, environmental stewardship, and the essential role of food and agriculture in building resilient, healthy communities.

Position Overview

Philo Ridge Farm is seeking a passionate and creative Head Baker to lead the development of its growing bread program, with a focus on local grains, sourdoughs and naturally leavened breads, and integration of other local products. The Head Baker will work closely with the Executive Chef, kitchen team, and retail team to develop an ambitious selection of breads for sale in the market and use in the restaurant. The ideal candidate for this position has prior experience working in leading bakeries, sourcing regional flours, managing bread production, creating distinct bread styles and loaves, and leveraging different baking methods and tools. In addition to leading the bread program, the Head Baker will also have responsibility for managing the baking of breakfast pastries for the retail store, such as muffins, scones, and biscuits.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, lead, and execute daily bread production and baking to support all food outlets at PRF, including the Restaurant, Market Prepared Foods, and Events

  • Collaborate with the Executive Chef to develop creative, seasonal breads that highlight ingredients grown and raised on the farm and in the region
  • Source ingredients from like-minded local producers when Philo Ridge Farm products are unavailable or to enhance seasonal variety
  • Set up and break down work areas efficiently and maintain appropriate stock levels and pars for outlets
  • Ensure proper food handling and safety practices, including routine sanitizing, temperature tracking, and safe equipment use
  • Perform regular cleaning and basic maintenance of kitchen and pastry equipment
  • Support staff meals, special events, and additional kitchen needs as assigned
  • Contribute to daily team communication through verbal check-ins and written documentation such as prep lists and journals

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a baker in a top-tier bread program or bakery
  • Strong foundational culinary skills with a commitment to consistency, attention to detail, and excellence in bread production
  • Passion for great food and hospitality, focused on delivering top quality products and guest experiences
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and adaptable to changing priorities while maintaining organization under pressure
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative and solution-oriented mindset
  • High standards of cleanliness, organization, and professionalism in all areas of work
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices, including compliance with state regulations
  • Experience with standard kitchen equipment and familiarity with basic maintenance and safety protocols
  • Ability to manage inventory, purchasing, and basic kitchen administration
  • Physically capable of standing or walking for extended periods, lifting and moving up to 50 pounds, and working in a range of indoor and outdoor conditions

Compensation

The expected salary range for this position is $75,000-85,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications. Relocation assistance is also available for candidates who will need it.
