SURVEY CHIEF / CREW LEAD

Charlotte, NC | Salary up to $120,000 DOE

I’m working with a growing underground utility contractor looking for an experienced Survey Chief / Crew Lead to support its expanding construction operations in Charlotte.

This is a hands-on role for someone who knows construction layout, can confidently run a survey crew and understands what it takes to get work installed accurately in the field.

You’ll support underground utility and infrastructure projects, including duct banks, conduit systems and manholes, working closely with Superintendents, Project Managers and VDC teams to ensure everything is laid out correctly and ready for installation.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Lead and coordinate day-to-day survey crew activities on active construction sites.
• Carry out construction staking and layout for underground utilities, duct banks, structures and site works.
• Establish and verify survey control, benchmarks, elevations, lines and grades.
• Read construction drawings and translate design information into accurate field layout.
• Operate GPS/GNSS equipment, robotic total stations, levels and data collectors.
• Coordinate priorities with field leadership and project teams to keep work moving.
• Verify completed installations and collect as-built information.
• Identify discrepancies early and help resolve layout issues before they impact construction.
• Train and support crew members while maintaining safe working practices around excavation and heavy equipment.

What We’re Looking For

• Previous experience as a Survey Party Chief, Survey Crew Chief or Survey Lead in construction.
• Strong hands-on experience with construction staking and layout.
• Underground utilities, civil infrastructure or site development experience is highly desirable.
• Ability to independently lead a crew and organise daily survey activities.
• Confident using modern survey equipment, GPS/GNSS and field data collection software.
• Strong understanding of construction drawings, coordinates, elevations and grades.
• A practical, detail-oriented approach and the confidence to work directly with field teams.
